Collaborators and losers. Wang Jingwei drinks a toast with German diplomats at Nanjing in late 1941. Both an ally and arival of Chiang, by 1938 Wang had despaired of China's ability to resist Japan and attempted a peacful settlement. In 1940 the Japanese named him head of the collaborationist Nanjing regime. Claiming to be Sun Yat-sen's true heir, Wang always flew the Guomingdang flag.
