Swift and bitter reprisals
December 1927 witnessed the final nightmare act of what had been a catastrophic year for the Communists.Stalin,angry and embarrassed by the movement's collapse in China,intructed two young Comintern agents to establish a worker's commune in Canton.Two few workers rallied to the call ,and reprisals by local military commanders were instantaneous and terrible.Executions were commonplace. The American Consul in Canton, Jay Calvin Huston,witnessed the massacres and sent photos of them back to the State Departement in Washington. The photos gave a violent,disturbed and distressing picture of the situation in China .
