Famine and feast. The terrible starvation that afflicted rural China between 1959 and 1962 was concealed not only from the West, but even from many of China's own people. Refugees, like those shown here begging for food after fleeting to Hong Kong in 1962, were often not believed when they told of the disasters in China.
